Lawrence “Earl” Alvey Obituary (1971 - 2017)

Lawrence “Earl” Alvey, 76, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017 at home. Earl was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Kempis Lee Alvey Jr. and Verna Izora Alvey on March 1, 1941. At the age of 8, his family moved to California. He graduated from Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, CA. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving as an Electronic Analog and Digital Data Processing Equipment Repairman from 1960-1964. He received an honorable discharge from the 666TH Radar Squadron at Mill Valley A.F. Station on Mt. Tamalpais. He began his telecommunication career with AT&T in 1964. While working as an electrical engineer, he met his future wife Roberta Joan Estep, and they were married June 19, 1965 in Las Vegas, NV. Earl passed away 8 days prior to their 52nd wedding anniversary. Early in his marriage, he moved to California City, California where they lived for 30 years while raising their son, Jason. He was an excellent motorcycle rider and in the 1970’s he participated in the off-road motorcycle race from Barstow to Vegas several times. He also rode for several years in the AMA District 36 off-road motorcycle competitions Hare & Hound in the Mojave Desert and Time Trials throughout Southern California. He was active in Boy Scout Troop 413, California City serving as Assistant Scout Master for twelve years and annually took the troop canoeing down the Colorado River beginning at Hoover Dam for seven days. He moved to Las Vegas in December 1996 and continued with his AT&T employment. After 41 years he retired in 2005. After his retirement, he consulted with Forkert Engineering & Surveying Services as a Contract Compliance Inspector for AT&T throughout the Western United States. Earl developed an early interest in his family’s genealogy, which encouraged his older brother to pursue genealogy after their father’s death in 1995. He was your ultimate “Do It Your-Selfer” (DIY). He mastered many trades including repairing appliances, “anything” electronic, home construction, welding, painting, plumbing, electrical and automotive repair. Earl is survived by his wife Roberta “Bobbie” Alvey; Son Jason Alvey, Las Vegas, NV; Brother Gary (Marci) Alvey, Healdsburg, CA; Sister Carol Oberg, Chino, CA; Grandchildren: Timothy Alvey-Lajeunesse; Great-Grandchild: Seth Alvey and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Earl was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert L. Alvey.
