Thomas Frank O’Brien Obituary (1948 - 2017)

Thomas Frank O’Brien, 69, of Yucca Valley, CA, died Monday, November 13, 2017 peacefully in Las Vegas, Nevada with his family by his side. Mr. O’Brien is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dorothy, his only son, Shawn and wife, Tiffany O’Brien of Las Vegas, Nevada. He also leaves behind his ‘pride and joy,’ three beautiful grandchildren; Leah, Colin and Carter. He is also survived by his siblings; Sister Margaret O’Brien, SSJ of Pennsylvania, Edward and his wife Linda O’Brien of California, and Patricia Nicewonger of Pennsylvania; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and his sister Elizabeth Ann Rankin. Thomas is a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several commendations, including; a Rifle Expert Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Pistol Expert Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. After Thomas was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps, he worked for Quaker State Corp. in Oil City, Pennsylvania for 20 years. Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien moved to Yucca Valley, California in 1991, where he worked for the Department of Defense at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base. He received several commendations for his civilian service. “Mr. O’Brien’s exceptional abilities, perseverance, and total commitment to excellence reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.” Thomas enjoyed spending quality time with his family, in particular, the grandchildren. He loved to frequent the casinos, and watch football, especially when the Steelers were playing. Thomas took an active role in helping others after retirement. He helped many veterans acquire their service connected disability benefits. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines never left him. A time of gathering will be held on Saturday, November 18 from 12:00-3:00p.m. at La Paloma Funeral Services, 5450 Stephanie Street in Las Vegas, Nevada 89122.
